Welcome to Old Florida...

the island...

Cedar Key is to me...

Relaxation first and foremost. Its natural beauty and unspoiled shores invite you to just kick back. It offers a modest history and genuine, honest local folks. Many mediums of art abound. From pottery, oils, watercolors, and multimedia pieces to photography.

The island has many artistic and cultural attractions: the Historical Society on 2nd Street, the Cedar Key Museum State Park, Shell Mound Park offers a perhistoric Indian mound and nature trail just outside of Cedar Key, and the Cedar Key Arts Center on 2nd Street features many local artist and artisan works.

Fishing...

If you enjoy the fine art of angling, Cedar Key offers some of the best flats or off-shore fishing in the area. We especially enjoy the trout and redfish action. We also enjoy sightings of turtles and dolphins. I once had a 160lb tarpon hit my light tackle trout rig. I only had 10lb test line and the battle was on. For 70 minutes I battled this majestic fish, pulling my small boat, sometime chasing with the boat when I was about to be spooled. I couldn't wear this fighter down and she broke my line with her tail and was free. Wow! What a memory.

For more information about local fishing and boating - you might want to review: The Florida Sportsman Big Bend Forecast, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Regulations, the Marine Weather Forecast from the NOAA Buoy, and the tides in Cedar Key. And, it doesn't get better than this - buy your fishing license online.

Exploring...

I enjoy the abundance of nature in Cedar Key. Artists and naturalists enjoy the many birds, trails, and kayak trips as well as the local architecture. Kayaking is very popular and Old Fenimore offers kayak racks to their guests for storage. There is a small beach to conveniently launch from. With many islands to explore and sunsets to enjoy, dolphins to watch, no streetlights or sirens to annoy you, I can't imagine a more relaxing place.

Cedar Key is set in the center of a National Wildlife Refuge - the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. The birding is incredible in nesting season, but the bird life is terrific around the island year round. The Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve is about 8 miles outside of Cedar Key and is a great evening stroll.

Dining...

Area restaurants are all very good and enjoyable. We especially like the live music at Frog's Landing or a drink outside on the deck at the Captains Table around sunset. Tony's Seafood offers a feeling of stepping back in time with its formal atmosphere and the food is fabulous, their seafood platter is our favorite. Anne's Place is where the locals go to eat and I know why, great food at reasonable prices. I could give tips on all of the area restaurants because my wife and I have made it important to try all of the local foods and enjoy participating in some of the local activities. We have a collection of information in our Guest Book in Island Time - be sure to check it out!

With the abundance of fresh seafood, every night is an adventure in dining. You never knew that clams could be prepared so many different way! Try them baked, broiled, steamed (yum - with lots of garlic), and roasted with rock salt. And don't forget to take some home!

Siteseeing...

Take the Island Hopper Tour, a must do activity, even if you have your own boat. We will try the kayak nature tour next time. For Deep Sea Fishing go with Carl Robinson located at Robinson Seafood. He is an excellent guide. Fishbones is where I usually get my bait and Paul is very helpful with providing you with good fishing tips.
